PSP/CBD Symposium 2009

The 2009 PSP/CBD Symposium for carers and therapists took place on 16th September. Over 80 delegates gathered at the Novotel Hotel, Atlantic Wharf, Cardiff to hear the latest on research and care.  Each year the Symposium is held in a different part of the UK and is for families affected by PSP or CBD, and health and welfare professionals working to support them or wanting to find out more.

On the day before, an International Meeting took place for representatives from The PSP Association, PSP France and Deutche PSP.

The 2009 Symposium was chaired by Dr. Huw Morris, Senior Lecturer in Neurology in Cardiff University and an Honorary Consultant at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff and Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport.  Click here for the session summaries. The main sessions comprised:

Managing Swallow with PSP and CBD by Dr Tom Hughes, Neurologist, University Hospital of Wales, with a research interest in swallowing in neurological disease.

Caring by Mrs Sylvia Denton, CBE, former President of the Royal College of Nursing, specialist nurse in cancer care and co-author of ‘Caring in the Comfort of Home'.

Hospice and Palliative Care by Dr Jo Hayes, Consultant in Palliative Medicine, Marie Curie Hospice, Penarth.

Eye Movement in PSP and CBD by Dr Adam Zermansky, Consultant Neurologist, Hope Hospital, Manchester.

Balance and Mobility issues PSP and CBD by Ms Lori Quinn, Department of Physiotherapy, Cardiff University.

The Future of Palliative Care in Neurological Diseases by Baroness Finlay, Professor of Palliative Medicine, Cardiff University School of Medicine, and Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Dying Well.

During breaks in proceedings, families, health and welfare professionals and speakers were able to discuss issues raised and also meet and talk with many of The PSP Association staff members, including the Nurse Specialists and Development Officers.

The 2010 PSP/CBD Symposium will be held in London.
